Northwest Airlines "EarthCares" Program

At Northwest Airlines, protecting the environment is a high priority. We understand the importance of complying with environmental regulations and doing our part to minimize our impact on the environment where practical and possible. We do so for the benefit of our employees and customers, future generations, and the global environment in which we operate.

Northwest's commitment to the environment is demonstrated by its $1 million donation to The Nature Conservancy® as a founding partner. The partnership will focus on strategic Nature Conservancy land conservation projects around Northwest's domestic hubs, a unique project in China, and a carbon offset program in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. View the full announcement of our EarthCares program.

Northwest Airlines is committed to exploring alternative, renewable energy sources in order to optimize the energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of our facilities. NWA's solar-powered partnership with the Port of Portland and our customer, Nike, demonstrates this commitment. Together, we installed solar panels to power Nike's retail store at the Portland Airport. This joint effort will ultimately meet the store's entire energy demand through solar power, thereby reducing the annual CO2 emissions associated with the airport's operation by over 16,000 pounds.
